The feels awesome. Beyond awesome even. Especially because this look — leopard on leopard — is a look Giovanna Battaglia wore on the street, not something that some stylist pulled together for the runway. And it coulda gone wrong, very wrong, but it looks cool and right and I’m so tempted to try this at home.

For Giovanna Battaglia, this look is second nature, something she does without too much mulling it over beforehand. It is her awesome.

Here’s another example. I went thrifting with Brick. And when I say thrifting, I don’t mean those jaunty places where everything’s been carefully curated and it’s run by a bunch of hipsters who drink expensive coffee. I mean those sad places in the backwaters of Palm Springs where you almost want to cry because you know somebody’s children or grandchildren were just like, Get this stuff outta here, I can’t deal with it anymore. I’m not talking Kelly Wearstler’s Palm Springs but the other one. The one where people collected plates with scenes of The Nutcracker on them. Or dolls. You walk into these places — bright and flourescent and clinical — and what goes through your brain is: There’s nothing here. Let’s leave. Let’s leave here before I feel morose about how I’m gonna end up, with someone going through my stuff and stuck in a nursing home with no one to visit me and not even enough brains to remember if anyone should.

And then Brick comes in and suddenly there’s a lot of stuff. There’s a cool brass lamp and some jars with wooden tops and a skinny white dish that could be Danish and a paint by numbers cat painting that’s so awful it’s ironic. Suddenly this place is a treasure trove of cool stuff I want and why didn’t I see that that chair was an Eames and the feeling now is This person must’ve had a cool life and didn’t even know it.

We all have something like that, something that we brush off, feeling Of course, if I can do this, anyone can do this, but the thing is, they can’t. And we need to recognize it and do it and do it often. Because it is awesome. Beyond awesome. And beyond that, we are awesome.
